Pip did not forget his adventure with the convict for a long time.He often dreamed about the man on the marshes, but he never told anybody about it, not even Joe. Pip thought that Joe would never speak to him again,if he knew that he had stolen the file and the pork pie.
One evening, about a year later, Mrs. Joe came home from market with Mr.Pumblechook. they had news for Pip and Joe.
"Uncle Pumblechook has kindly arranged for you to go to miss Havisham"s house and play," said Mrs.Joe."She wants a boy to go and play there."
Miss Havisham was a rich lady who lived alone in a big house in a town near the village.
"Why does she want a boy to go there and play?" asked Joe.
"I don"t know," snapped Mrs  Joe,"but she is very rich, and pip is going there tomorrow morning."
At ten o" clock the next morning,Pip and Me. pumblechook house was large, and all the window were barred.
Mr. Pumblechook rang a bell at the gate.A very pretty girl about the same age as Pip opened it.
"What is your name?" she asked. "Pumblechook," replied Mr. Pumblechook,"and this is Pip."
"Come in,Pip," replied the girl."Miss Havisham does not wish to see you," she said to Mr.Pumblechook, and she shut the gate and locked it,leaving him outside.
The girl led Pip into the house by a side door.Inside the house,it was quite dark. She picked up a lighted candle and led Pip along passages and up a staircase.the girl stopped outside a door and said to Pip,"Go in," She went away and took the candle with her.
Pip was left alone in the dark.He knocked at the door.A voice inside told him to come in.He opened the door and went into a big room, lighted by many candles.the curtains were closed.
A lady was sitting at a dressing-table, dressed in white silk, with a long white veil upon her head. She had white flowers in her hair. Her hair was white too.One white shoe was on her foot.the other shoe lay  on the dressing-table with a handkerchief,a pair of gloves, and a bouquet of withered flowers.Trunks, half packed with beautiful clothes, lay about the room.Everything was old and dusty.Pip sae that the lady was old, and her white dress was going yellow with age.the clock had stopped at twenty minutes to nine.
"Who is it?" said the lady, who was Miss Havisham.
"Pip,ma"am," said Pip. "The boy M.Pumblechook brought."
"Let me look at you," said the lady."I am tied of men and women.I want to be amused, and I want to see childern play.Call Estella."
Pip went to the door, and shouted,"Estella!"and the play cads with pip.
"But he is only a common working boy!" cried Estella scornfully."What coase hands he has,and what thick boots!"
they played two games of cards, which Estella won.Miss Havisham seemed pleased. She said,"come back is six days,Pip.Estella, take him downstais, and give him something to eat.he may go into the garden.Go,Pip."
Estella took Pip outside. She fetched a plate of meat and a mug of beer, which she gave to Pip as though she were feeding a dog.
When she had gone,Pip hid behind one of the gates, kicked the wall had, pulled his hair, and cried. He Felt better after that, and ate his dinner. Eastella came back with the keys,to let him out.She laughed at him, as if she knew that he had been crying.
